EYELASH REJUVENATION 09
LATISSE™ SET TO BECOME A MARKET LEADER DURING 2009 AS AN EYELASH GROWTH PRODUCT
“Latisse” is capable of promoting eyelash growth and will be a valuable asset to the cosmetic industry as a prescription topical, only being available through physicians. Current reports confirm that the topical can stimulate eyelash growth, to make them longer and thicker. It is dabbed like an eye-liner at the roots of the eye lashes on the upper eyelid. Side-effects are minor and reversible, but cannot be ignored. The product is not meant to go directly on the eye but is directed at the eyelids. In these persons, glaucoma is not being treated. Home-use, with once-daily application. Images, before and after on the Internet, show good lash growth at 8 weeks and in some cases, before.
Latisse™ is a spin-off of the glaucoma drug Lumigan™ that is used as an eye-drop by ophthalmic surgeons.FDA approved this topical eye medication during 2001. Eyelash-growth has been recorded as one of the known side-effects of Lumigan™.

MORE ABOUT LATANOPROST, PROSTAGLANDIN-INDUCED HAIR GROWTH.
Studies conducted in 2002, from Seattle, showed that latanoprost can induce anagen ( the growth phase) in telogen (resting) follicles while inducing hypertrophic changes in the involved follicle ( Johnstone et al, 2002, Swedish Medical Centre, Seattle).” Correlation with laboratory studies suggests that initiation and completion of latanoprost hair-growth occur very early in anagen and the likely target is the dermal papilla”. This pharmacological agent has also been used in drops to treat glaucoma in man, in which the intra-ocular pressure is increased. One of its side-effects has also been eyelash growth, and this effect has been capitalized on by the beauty and cosmetic industry, and exploited to formulate eyelash enhancers.
OTHER PRODUCTS THAT CAN IMPROVE THE EYELASH LINE
- Eyelash extension by synthetic lashes (Planet Nail Distribution..... see www.eyelash.co.za. ).
- Revitalash™, has been used with some success in the USA. Now, also available in South Africa for some time, is available from a distributor in Johannesburg. On the internet, it has been promoted as an eyelash growth enhancer. One has to shop around for a special and prices have been slashed from R2745 to R 1604 for the kit. The distributors have indicated that visible results, in terms of eyelash growth, can be expected in 3-10 weeks after the first application. More info can be gleaned from www.revitalash.com. Currently the product is available as a non-prescription cosmetic. This differs from Latsisse™, that is a prescription drug, and has to be obtained from a registered physician and pharmacist.
APPLIED EYELASH ANATOMY AND HISTOLOGY ( After Gray’s and Moore’s Anatomy)
- Eyelashes ( L. Cilia) are sited at the margins of the eyelids; both on upper and lower lids
- Large sebaceous glands associated with the base of the eyelashes are called ciliary glands by some. This is often the site of staphylococcal infection and the development of a painful sty in the eye and on the lid margin and around the base of the eyelash.
- These are short, curved hairs, arranged as double or triple rows.
- The hairs of the upper lid are more numerous than the lower lid. These are the ones targeted by the lash enhancers
- To avoid interlacing when the lids are closed , the upper hairs are curved up and the lower ones down( Gray’s Anatomy)
- The eyelashes initially point inferior, are sited anterior to the tarsal plates and inferior to the orbicularis muscle ( Junqueira et al: Basic Histology, Lange)
- The eyelashes are surrounded by epidermis. At the base of the hair follicle are the glands of Moll ( modified sweat glands):Kierszenbaum AB, Histology and Cell Biology. An introduction to Pathology. Mosby 2002.
FOR COMPLETE FACIAL REJUVENATION AT YOUR SALON UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION , CONSIDER THESE OPTIONS:
- Neostrata™ facial peel, also known as exfoliation for a good complexion
- Juvederm™ Ultra as filler for the peri-oral region and nasiolabial folds. Effective and comfortable on injection because it contains built in topical anaesthesia
- LED photofacial..... for a real skin glow and improved texture
- Botox™ for the forehead, glabellar region and crow-feet
- Latisse™ or Revitalash™ as eyelash enhancers
- Cosmelan™ for skin hyper-pigmentation, lentigenes and solar spots
- Facial plasma resurfacing with natural platelet-rich plasma (PRP), either as injection mesotherapy ( Regenlab-Regenkit-ACR-PRP™) or as the latest Regenlab-PRP CELLULAR FACIAL MASK™, without need for a single injection. The client now has two choices. The PRP-MASK™ is applied in the salon, topically to the face, and this obviates the problems such as injection induced bruises, swelling altogether. No burning, or allergies as your own plasma is used, which contains the rejuvenating factors. And affordable. The Regenlab Mask™ is very popular, quick and is applied for 30 minutes. There is no down-time and the client can go back to work within an hour. This is the most advanced type of biological mask in South Africa and is cutting edge technology, developed in Switzerland (REGENLAB™, Mollen) and quantified in Singapore, and Cape Town. The rejuvenating factors from the mask are absorbed into the skin of the face and kick-starts the anti-aging and beauty process. This process restores solar damage and has other unique properties. The process is backed by robust science and accurate digital facial analysis performed in Bellville, Cape Town.
